Compact in Class Only: Comparing the 2018 Tiguan With the CR-V & Rav4

Compact in Class Only: Comparing the 2018 Tiguan With the CR-V & Rav4

The CUV (or Compact Utility Vehicle) segment has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years. Customers are looking for a vehicle that provides interior space, function, performance, and safety, all in the most compact packaging available. If that sounds like a tall order, it is a task that Volkswagen is up to. They have adjusted the 2018 Tiguan, a more niche CUV, into one that can compete with the rest of the segment. Not only does it compete, the Tiguan edges out some of its competitors in a number of areas. Read on as we compare the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan to Honda’s CR-V, and Toyota’s Rav4.

Performance

There are a number of metrics by which to compare vehicles, all of which generally depend on what you are using the vehicle for. All three vehicles, the 2018 Tiguan, CR-V, and Rav4 all have similar fuel economy numbers; the Rav4 edging out the 2018 Tiguan’s 22 mpg in the city with 23 mpg in the city. However, this could be a by-product of the 2018 Tiguan’s 184 hp over the Rav4’s 176. The Tiguan is also the only turbocharged engine of the three which, when matched with Volkswagen’s 8-speed automatic transmission, makes for a smooth and exhilarating drive. With standard FWD, and optional AWD, the 2018 Tiguan is set to handle any driving adventure you think to throw its way.

Interior

The 2018 Tiguan edges out its competition, especially in the interior department. While the Rav4 abandoned its 3rd row seating, and the CR-V only offers 3rd row seating in other markets, Volkswagen’s entry into the CUV segment has an optional 3rd-row seating feature, available in all trim lines, that doesn’t sacrifice the comfort of the passengers. Of course, when folded down, you are treated to the same amount of trunk space available in the five passenger variants of the Tiguan. A good portion of this extra space is due to the exceptional design found within the 2018 Tiguan. Volkswagens have always been known for their smart design — and the 2018 Tiguan is no different. Clean and uncomplicated lines alongside smart storage solutions make the Tiguan’s interior an excellent use of its available space. Volkswagen is also known for its unfussy styling, termed affordable luxury. The interior of the 2018 Tiguan has a far more luxurious minimalism to it, compared to the more frugally appointed interiors of the CR-V and Rav4, certainly making it a winner in our books.

Technology & Safety

The 2018 Tiguan offers an incredible array of safety features available; from Adaptive Front-light System LED headlights, to Park Distance Control, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Assist, and the Area View 360° system, there is no shortage of safety features to make your drive more comfortable. Safety features like the Hill Start Assist on the Honda CR-V fail to inspire any great amount of confidence when it comes to on-road safety. The 2018 Tiguan also beats out the CR-V and Rav4 in terms of available technology. Volkswagen’s standard 6.5-inch touch screen infotainment system beats both the 5-inch and 6.1-inch system found in the CR-V and Rav4 respectively, while neither the Honda nor the Toyota offer the same 12.3-inch, fully customizable, interactive digital cockpit found in the 2018 Tiguan. Always be cognizant of your fuel economy and how long you’ve got until your next fill-up, alongside driver assistance commands available at the touch of your heated leather steering-wheel.

The 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan, available at Jim Pattison Volkswagen Surrey, is Volkswagen’s updated entry into the fast growing CUV segment. But with exceptional power, styling, safety, and technology, there isn’t much to keep it from becoming head of its class. If you’re interested in the 2018 Tiguan, come by and speak to a member of our friendly and informative sales team, or call to book a test drive. Here at Jim Pattison Volkswagen Surrey, we are always happy to go head to head with any other class comparable vehicle, as we truly believe that Volkswagens are the people’s car
